India Currents: Grammy Nomination For Shakti!

The band’s latest album, This Moment has been nominated for the Best Global Music Album.

Since British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian tabla maestro Zakir Hussain co-founded Shakti in the 1970s, the band has earned a discerning fan base and critical acclaim for its unique brand of world fusion music over the past fifty years. The band’s latest album This Moment is nominated for the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album.

In 2023, Shakti reunited with a new lineup featuring founding members McLaughlin and Hussain, as well as vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V. Selvaganesh, and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan to record This Moment. This was the third album produced under the Shakti name, and the first in 45 years. Post the release, a highly successful World Tour – Shakti’s last – marked fifty years of the band.

The band also played on NPR’s popular Tiny Desk series, their set proving that Shakti is as formidable a musical force today as it was in the 70s.
